Brackets are medical devices that are popularly called “braces” and are used to correct the crookedness and curvature of the teeth. These apparatuses align the teeth in the medium or long term. There are different types of brackets used in orthodontic treatments.
Metal brackets are the brackets that are attached to the teeth and come to mind when it comes to braces. These materials are produced using high quality stainless steel material. It is attached to the brackets with wires called arc wire. The advantage of metal wires is that they are subject to less friction. For this reason, a faster treatment may be possible in some patients, although not in all patients.
This type of bracket, also called self ligating bracket, has caps. Its appearance is quite similar to the metal type. The arch wire can slide freely in the groove of the bracket. It is the caps that hold the arc wire. There is no need to use an elastic structure or a metal tie. This model also has less friction. Due to the less friction, the treatment can give faster results.
Ceramic brackets, which are in opaque white color, have recently attracted great interest in terms of aesthetics. However, it has slightly larger dimensions than metal ones. Since this causes more food accumulation, those who use this model should pay more attention to oral and dental cleaning. In addition, when compared to metal brackets, ceramic brackets have a more fragile structure and need to be handled more carefully. Therefore, ceramic brackets are not useful for children. Ceramic brackets have more friction and a slightly longer treatment time.
Treatment with lingual brackets is an orthodontic treatment in which the brackets are placed on the inside of the teeth for aesthetic reasons. In lingual orthodontic treatment, it is not noticeable from the outside that you are treated, but your teeth continue to improve. For lingual orthodontic treatment, specially produced lingual brackets are used. The duration of treatment is similar to traditional orthodontic treatment.
