Orthodontic Appliances

Appliances used in orthodontic treatment are divided into 2 as intraoral and extraoral appliances.

Extraoral Appliances

1. Headgear

Cervical Headgear

It is used to control the growth direction of the upper jaw in cases where the forward growth of the upper jaw is excessive and to take the upper teeth backwards.

Occipital Headgear

It is used to provoke forward and downward growth of the upper jaw in cases where the upper jaw growth is upwards.

Reverse Headgear

It is used to move the upper jaw forward in cases where the lower jaw is positioned forward due to insufficient growth of the upper jaw.

2. Chin Cup

It is used in cases where the lower jaw grows forward and downward.

Intraoral Appliances

1. Functional jaw appliances:

Monoblock

It is used in cases where the lower jaw is behind and the upper jaw is forward.

Twin - Block

In cases where the lower jaw is behind, it is an appliance used separately by attaching to the lower and upper teeth.

Trainer

It is used in cases where the lower jaw is behind and the upper jaw is forward in early age children.

Fixed Functional Jaw Appliances

  • Forsus fatigue: It is applied through the wires in the lower and upper arc, its active element is the spring.
  • Jasper jumper: It consists of a flexible spring applied to the lower and upper strings.
  • Herbst appliance: It consists of a piston system.

2. Jaw Expansion Appliances

Chin Expansion Appliances

It is applied to the upper jaw. Right-left, anterior-posterior and 3-way jaw expansion appliances are available. Sometimes it can be applied to the lower jaw to widen the arch.

Rapid Jaw Expansion Appliance

It is applied in cases where the upper jaw is narrow.

Slow Jaw Expansion Appliance

It is applied in cases where the upper jaw is narrow.

3. Reinforcement Appliances

It is used to hold the straightened teeth in place after orthodontic treatment.

Lingual retainer

They are fixed wires that are attached to the inner parts of the lower teeth.

Palatinal retainer

They are fixed wires attached to the inner parts of the upper teeth.

Hawley plaque

They are acrylic plates with curved wires on the front surface (U) of the teeth.

Essix records

They are transparent plates made of Essix material.

4. Placeholders

It is used to protect the place of the prematurely lost or extracted milk tooth.

They are appliances used in situations where space is very small.
